Oklahoma Security Guard Training

Schools

Security training in Oklahoma takes place at 42 state approved schools. Many of the approved schools are public career tech schools although there are a minority of private schools as well.

Content - Unarmed

To achieve permanent licensure the applicant for an unarmed license must complete 40 hours of mandated training. This training is segregated into two separate phases each consisting of 20 hours of study. Oklahoma licensing officials refer to this training as Phase I and Phase II.

Content - Armed

Those seeking licensure as an armed office must complete 32 hours of what is known as Phase IV training. For the curious, who have noticed the absence of a Phase III, it is important to explain that Phase III training only applies to those who are seeking a private investigator license.

Additional Training and Continuing Education

Oklahoma officers must complete eight hours of continuing education prior to renewing their license. Oklahoma schools such as the Moore-based Security Officer Requalification (SOR) offer an array of classes. These classes provide training such as taser, defensive tactics and use of force. The use of force class will allow the officer to demonstrate a certified use of continuum of force weaponry.

Testing

At the conclusion of Phase I and II training the officer takes his state mandated unarmed security test.

Armed officers must pass a range test as part of the Phase IV training. The shooter should expect to be required to score at least a 70% on the range test.

Scheduling

The pace of the training depends of the training venue chosen by the officer. For example, the previously mentioned SOR school schedules its Phase I and II unarmed training over the course of five eight-hour days. This allows the officer to quickly knock out and meet his required hours. The Tulsa-based Center of Professional Studies provides students with the option of taking classes during the day or night. The nighttime class takes twice as long to complete.

Cost

The cost varies by venue. SOR charges $100 for phases 1 and 2 and $125 for phase 4. The use of force class costs $100. The Center of Professional Studies charges $95 for the eight-hour continuing education course for security officers. Additionally, the training programs will probably require the student to bring his own ammunition for the phase 4 course.
